Ep1 - A Doctor Shares What Anxiety Is

If you’re new to Anxious Faith, our goal is to look at the intersection of faith and anxiety. What better way to start Season 2 than by speaking to a doctor, who can enlighten us as to what anxiety is - from a medical perspective.

Sarah is a GP here in Australia (and we’re referring to her just as Sarah for her privacy), who has seen a lot of patients coming to her for the first time because of anxiety, especially after all that the last couple of years have thrown at us. She shares from her knowledge of what anxiety is: what’s going on in our bodies when we feel anxious, why our bodies feel the way they do, and what we can be doing to try and help ourselves and our bodies when we’re feeling anxious.

What she shares isn’t specific medial advice for anyone, so if you are struggling with anxiety or your mental health in general, we’d really encourage you to speak to your own doctor about this, or to reach out to one of the organisations on our Help page.

Sarah shares four, seemingly simple, things we can be doing to help ourselves - eating well, exercising, sleeping well, and connecting with others. While they may seem basic, or we may have heard them before plenty of times, Sarah goes into why we should do these things. It’s a big part of this episode, but you can also see that helpful info that we’ve distilled down into a resource on our site - you can read it here.

Finally, and this is for our Australian audience specifically, if you’re at a stage of feeling like you might need to go and see your GP to talk about your mental health, or are trying to encourage a friend or loved one to do so, there can be a lot of stress and tension from not knowing what that appointment might be like. Sarah helps us understand what that appointment might be like in this short video clip that we couldn’t fit in the episode.
